The Origins
The Japanese Colonial Period ─
Noko クラブ（Nenggao Club）
Est. 1920s
Nenggao Club was originally established as a recreational venue for Japanese military personnel stationed in Nengao District (which encompasses present-day Puli, Guoxing, Ren'ai, and part of Yuchi Township). Although the exact year of construction remains unconfirmed, archival records such as contemporary news reports and historical maps suggest it was likely built in the 1920s.
The Transformation
Post-War Era ─
Sheng-Ci Tang Clinic (Dr. Tong Mu-Sheng’s Clinic)
Est. 1949
Around 1945, Dr. Tong Mu-Sheng graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tokyo Imperial University and returned to his hometown of Puli to practice medicine. He purchased the property and expanded it to serve as both his private residence and medical clinic, which officially opened its doors in 1949.
The Rebirth
Nenggao Club B&B
Est. 2020
Following Dr. Tong's passing in 1999, the house fell into severe disrepair, a situation worsened by the devastating 921 Earthquake. In 2013, local Puli architect Chuang Chien-Te, alongside five other shareholders with backgrounds in architecture, jointly acquired the property. After a meticulous seven-year restoration process, the structure was faithfully restored to its former glory and revitalized as a boutique guesthouse. Honoring its heritage, the property retains its original name from the Japanese colonial era—"Nengao Club"—marking the official beginning of a vibrant new chapter.
